The Homeowner’s Guide to HVAC Troubleshooting

August 20, 2021Jon SniderBlog

As a homeowner, you’ve got a lot to take care of. From the roof to foundation, there’s a lot to keep in mind to make sure your home is safe, healthy, and comfortable to live in—and one of your most important responsibilities is your HVAC system.

We’re reaching the end of another hot summer here in Texarkana, which means your HVAC system was probably working hard to keep you cool. If your system suddenly goes on the fritz, don’t panic! Try out these easy troubleshooting tips first.

Check Your Power

One of the most common complaints from homeowners is that their HVAC system won’t turn on. If this happens, the first thing you need to do is to make sure the unit has power. Check to see if your power supply cord is properly connected, and that you aren’t experiencing any power outages. Newer HVAC units can experience trips in the circuit breaker, so make sure to reset any switches that need it.

Check Your Air Filter

Dirty, clogged, or old air filters are often the culprit behind a badly functioning HVAC system. If it’s been over three months since you last changed your air filters, you’re likely overdue. Changing your air filters can fix the issue of weak airflow and also help prevent problems like frozen coils.

Check Your Thermostat

If your air conditioner is functioning more like a heater, you might have a thermostat problem. Sometimes this fix is as simple as just checking the thermostat and adjusting the setting. If your HVAC system isn’t responding to temperature changes, your thermostat batteries might need to be changed. Make sure to recycle them properly after switching them out!

Check Your Outside Unit

A lot of people tend to overlook the actual unit outside while checking their HVAC system, but it’s the most important part of your home’s airflow. This is especially important if the unit is surrounded by trees, as leaf and twig debris can cause problems. Check the condenser coil on a routine basis, and make sure the unit is free of any debris to help your HVAC system run more smoothly.

Check Your Ducts and Vents

Ducts and vents are what carry air throughout your home, so if you’re experiencing irregular airflow in certain areas, the problem might be here. As air is circulated, your ducts and vents can collect buildup from dust, dirt, fur, etc. Sometimes they can have tears from pests or improper installation. Get your air ducts and vents checked to make sure you aren’t compromising indoor air quality and, essentially, your comfort.

Call a Professional!

If you tried all these tips without success, don’t worry! While knowing how to troubleshoot is useful, sometimes you need a professional to step in and help you out. Issues like low refrigerant levels, control board issues, failed motors, and leaks are jobs best left in the hands of experts.
